Algeria and country in north Africa with 34 million inhabitants. The democratic republic lies south of the Mediterranean sea. Neighboring countries are Tunisia, Libya, Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Morocco. Along the coast is a narrow strip of lowland. In the north lies the Atlas mountains with fertile soil. More centrally, the semi arid areas: the Chott plateau, with salt lakes and the Saharan Atlas Mountains. Furthermore dominates the arid Sahara area with sand dunes, gravel or rocks and little vegetation. The climate ranges from Mediterranean to the coast to a steppe climate in the plateaus. In the south is a desert climate. The capital Algiers has 1 ½ million inhabitants. It consists of a modern plane portion, near shore and an old city, built against steep hills. Sightseeing, the seaport, the Kasbah, government buildings, churches, mosques, cathedrals, palaces, the national library and the Basilica of Algiers. Other cities are Oran, Annaba, Constantine, Batna, Blida, Setif and Sidi-bel-Abbes. At the World Heritage list of UNESCO: the ruined city of Beni Hammad Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad, the high plateau n'Ajjer Tassili, the M'zab valley, the old Roman cities Djemila, Tipaza and Timgad and the Kasbah of Algiers. Further attractions are the ruins of Tenes and Cherchell, the red sand Timimoun city and the many oases.
