Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean with 1.3 million inhabitants. The republic is located 1800 kilometers east of Madagascar. Mauritius comprises the islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues, and the Cargados Carajos Agalega Islands. Mauritius has a volcanic origin. The landscape is determined by non-active volcanoes, a central plateau with low mountains, deep canyons, crater lakes, many rivers and waterfalls. There are pieces of tropical jungle. Along the narrow coastal strip are beautiful sandy beaches and coral reefs. There is a tropical maritime climate. The capital Port Louis has 148,000 inhabitants. Sights include the city market, the Fort Adelaide, the museum of natural history and cultural districts. Other cities are Cure Pipe, Vacoas and Mahebourg. Other attractions are the many museums, Hindu temples, Grand Bay, the botanical gardens, national park, the bird park Casela, the island of Rodriques, the creole country houses, the ruins of the Dutch Fort Frederick Henry, the ruins of Balaclava and tropical Domaine du Chasseur forest.
