South Africa is a country located at the southern tip of Africa and has 44 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Lesotho is an independent state, completely surrounded by South Africa. The republic is bordered in the west to the Atlantic Ocean and in the east to the Indian Ocean. The landscape of South Africa is very varied and consists of highlands, mountains, different plateaus, rolling hills, valleys, sand plains, basins, lakes, rivers, bush crops and afforestation. The coastal plain consists of beautiful beaches, deep bays, lagoons and forests. There is a temperate climate. The legislative power is based in Bloemfontein, the legislature sits in Cape Town and the administrative power in Pretoria. Other major cities are Bisho, Durban, Johannesburg, Kimberley, Mafikeng, Nelspruit, Pietermaritzburg, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Soweto and Ulund. At the World Heritage list of UNESCO are the Swamp Country Park Greater St. Lucia, Robben Island, the National Park Drakensberg, the Vredefort crater, the Mapungubwe cultural landscape, the protected areas in the Region of the Cape Flora, cultural and botanical landscape of Richter Field and the archaeological sites of fossils of hominides in Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai and the surrounding area.
