Tanzania is a country in east Africa with 40 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. East is the coastline of the Indian Ocean. The federal republic consists of mainland Tanganyika and the island of Zanzibar. Two arms of the Great African Rift Valley running through Tanzania. This has created several large lakes. In the north is savannah landscape with mountains. In the east are the Ambori caves, a sloping plateau and a narrow coastal strip, with many islands. The landscape consists of steppes, grass savannas, hilly plateaus, many rivers and tropical forest. There is a tropical climate. Capital Dodoma has 180,000 inhabitants. Other cities are Arusha, Bukoba, Dar el Salaam, Kigoma, Kilwa Masoko, Kondoa, Moshi, Mtwara, Musoma, Pangani, Songea, Sumbawanga, Tabora, Tanga and Zanzibar. On the list of UNESCO world heritage: the national parks of Serengeti and Kilimanjaro, the protected area of Ngorongoro, the Selous game reserve, the ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and songo Mnara, the prehistoric rock paintings of Kondoa and Stone Town on Zanzibar island. Other attractions are the shifting sands, the Masai Mara and the Chagga tribe, the many game parks, the sources of sulfur Galanos, the Olduvai Gorge and the island of Pemba.
