Madagascar is an island on the east coast with 20 million inhabitants. The republic lies between the Strait of Mozambique and the Indian Ocean. The red plateaus, steppe areas and rock formations are central. Around it a wide variety of landscapes: alluvial plains and sedimentary plains, desert and steppe areas, volcanic mountains with a lot of forestation, marshy areas, lagoons, tropical rain forest and narrow coastal strips. The UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the Tsingy de Bemaraha Nature Reserve, the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga and the Atsinanana Rainforests. Other sights include the unique flora, nature reserves, the islands of Ile Aux Nattes and Sainte Marie, the royal palaces, the pirate cemetery in Ambodifotatra, Antsirabe and the wine region around Fianarantsoa.
