Morocco is a country in north-western Africa with more than 34 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Mauritania and Algeria. The monarchy has a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea. Western Sahara is a separate area. It is still largely under the control of Morocco. The Rif Mountains are in the north. The Atlas Mountains range from south to northwest. In the other part of Morocco there are oases, the Sahara, steppe areas and a fertile coastal plain. There is a Mediterranean climate. The capital Rabat has 1.6 million inhabitants. Sights include the Tour Hassan mosque, the Archaeological Museum, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Royal Palace and the Medina. Other cities are Casablanca, Fez, Marrakesh, Agadir, Tangier, Meknes, Oujda, Kenitra, Tétouan and Safi. Unseco's World Heritage List includes the Ksar of AitBenHaddou, the Roman excavations of Volubilis, the Portuguese city of Mazagan, the Djemaa el Fna square in Marrakesh and the Medina of Fez, Marrakesh, Meknes, Tétouan and Essaouira. Other sights include the white city of Asilah, the waterfalls at Ouzoud, the desert town of Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley, the mountain village of Tiziane and agriculture at Meknes.
