South Africa is a country located on the southern tip of Africa and has 44 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Lesotho is an independent state, completely surrounded by South Africa. The republic borders the Atlantic Ocean in the west and the Indian Ocean in the east. The landscape of South Africa is very varied and consists of highlands, mountains, different plateaus, rolling hills, valleys, sandy plains, basins, lakes, rivers, scrubland and forests. The coastal plain consists of beautiful beaches, deep bays, forests and lagoons. There is a temperate climate. The judiciary is in Bloemfontein, the legislature is in Cape Town and the administrative in Pretoria. Other important cities are Bisho, Durban, Johannesburg, Kimberley, Mafikeng, Nelspruit, Pietermaritzburg, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Soweto and Ulund. The UNESCO World Heritage list includes the Wetlands Park Greater St. Lucia, Robben Island, the Drakensberg National Park, the Vredefort crater, the cultural landscape Mapungubwe, the protected areas of the Cape Floraregion, the cultural and botanical landscape of Richtersveld and the archaeological sites of fossils from hominides in Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai and surroundings.
